Professional Brewers and Home Brewing enthusiasts; Do you want to be a part of the growing ideas and concepts of San Diego’s local market? Hopatul Farms is a great way to start! Hopatul Farms is a local east county property located just south of Highway 79 in Japatul Valley.
The farm, still being young, has been producing hops since early 2012. Every year, new hops plants are being created from the old root systems that were initially planted at the farm. Multiple Hop varieties have been established to determine the best strains for the inland San Diego climate at the farm. Hop varieties have also been selected that can help exhaust the need for certain strains that San Diego breweries use, during any hop shortages. With the boom of San Diego breweries; hop contracts from up north might not completely fulfill a brewery’s hop needs throughout the year. What a better place to find a little relief when you find it local!
The hops growing in this climate gets harvested once a year, towards the last week of July or the first few weeks of August. This of course is all subject to the weather for any particular year. Hopatul hops have been featured many times at Main Tap Tavern. Our hops are often used to wet or dry hop one off cask brews from breweries such as Butcher’s Brewing, AleSmith, Coronado Brewing, Ballast Point and Lightning. 2013’s harvest of Chinook, wet hopped Mike Hess Brewing’s first batch of their San Diego IPA brewed at their new North Park location. Of course, you don’t have to be a commercial brewery to benefit. Home brewers are also encouraged to make contact with the farm, in regards to being supplied with these whole hops for their own batches.
Hopatul Farms is also involved in the practice of growing organic produce. It has produced mouthwatering Bell Peppers, Artichokes, Tomatoes, Onions, Lettuce, etc. The intention is to expand on everything that has good success at the farm. Local food/beverage establishments will be supplied with these organic products as an alternative to the big commercial warehouses that currently supply many of the businesses in San Diego County currently.
Thoughout 2014, the farm’s property has been undergoing new developments, with the intention of farming more hops and organic produce, it is a great location for outdoor events as well! Whether it be a beer festival, a corporate party, or a wedding, all will benefit from the beautiful outdoor country setting.
